The DeSales University wireless network is available in each residence hall as well as various other areas throughout campus.
Getting Connected
There are multiple networks available throughout campus:
- DeSales—is the primary wireless network. This is a secure connection that will require your MyDSU username and password to connect. This should be the preferred network for all students, faculty, and staff due to its high degree of security and privacy.
- DeSales Guest—is available in many public areas of campus for the convenience of our guests. This is an unsecured network and does not encrypt data. Any data sent or received while connected to this network is subject to interception.
- DSU—is the previous generation of wireless network on campus. This network will require your username and password to connect but is not secure. Like the "DeSales Guest" network, any data sent or received while connected to this network is subject to interception.
Improving Wireless Access
Keep Wireless Drivers Updated
For PC users, we recommend that you make sure that your wireless network card driver is the latest version available from the manufacturer's web site. For Apple computers, these drivers are included with your standard system software updates.
Do Not Use Unauthorized Wireless Devices
Any device that broadcasts a wireless signal communicates using the same setoff frequencies as the DeSales wireless network. A good rule of thumb is that if you can see your device in your computer's list of available wireless networks, its wireless functionality should be disabled.
The most common devices that cause problems are:
- Personal Wireless Routers
When wireless networks see others in the same area, they all slow down to share the air time evenly. For example, if there are three people with their own networks, each will get 25% of the air time leaving the rest of the users in the building on the DeSales network to share the remaining 25%. Personal routers and access points are the source of many network issues. As a result, they are not permitted on campus.
- Wireless Printers
Wireless printers are designed for use on a home network and can interfere with the campus network in the same way as a personal wireless router. Please use a USB cable to connect your computer to your printer and see your manufacturers instructions for information on disabling the wireless features.
- Cordless Phones
Many types of cordless phones use the same frequencies as wireless networks. This can also add to the interference and cause additional problems. Use a cellular or corded telephone when possible. DECT 6.0 cordless phones operate on a different band and will not interfere.
- Microwaves
Microwave ovens emit bursts of radio waves across the entire spectrum of frequencies used by wireless networks. Devices located close to an microwave that's in use may see poor connection strength and/or speed.
