Grammarly does not have a native, built-in integration with D2L Brightspace, meaning the software cannot be installed directly into the learning management platform. If Grammarly is appearing while you use Brightspace, it is because you have the Grammarly browser extension or the Grammarly desktop app active on your computer, which automatically injects writing suggestions into Brightspace's text fields.
Depending on what you want to achieve, you can easily customize or block this behavior.
How to Turn Off Grammarly in Brightspace
If you are taking an exam or writing an assignment and need Grammarly to stop appearing, you can disable it without completely uninstalling the tool:
- Turn off for Brightspace only: Click the floating Grammarly widget or the extension icon in your browser toolbar while on your Brightspace page. Open the settings menu within the widget and select "Turn off for this site" (or toggle off "Check text on this site"). Refresh the page.
- Temporarily pause the extension: Click the Grammarly extension icon in your browser's toolbar and toggle off "Check text with browser extension" to pause it everywhere.
- Close the desktop application: If you are using the Windows or Mac desktop software, right-click the Grammarly icon in your computer's system tray or menu bar and click "Quit Grammarly".
Why You Might Want to Turn It Off
- Academic Integrity & AI Detection: While standard spelling and grammar checks are generally acceptable, using Grammarly’s generative AI rewriting features can sometimes trigger institutional AI-content flags or plagiarism detectors like Turnitin.
- LockDown Browsers: If your professor requires the Respondus LockDown Browser for quizzes, background apps like Grammarly will block the exam from launching until you fully close them
